Growing ownership by planting and nurturing the NEURON THREE
The innovation story goes something like this – as reflection and illustration at the same time:
This growing ownership as concept – was a concrete or specific INNOVATION concept – growing out of my experiences in traveling and living – some weeks or months – in countries like Thailand, South Korea, Denmark, Norway and – well, always in my head.
Daniel Pink mentioned in one of his youtube talks something that became a kind FOCUS MAGNET – this magnet dragged – like created thin neurons in my brain – different areas, knowledge, experiences – thoughts from before – and new ones – all dragged by this OWNERSHIP reflect topic that I had been thinking ono for YEARS.
The superimportant question I wanted my brain to work on – for years this was an unconscious need of mine – and is ONE of the key innovations growing out of my “project creativity” that I consciously invested more than 2 years of my life in/on.
HOW TO GROW OWNERSHIP IN OTHER PEOPLE?
How do we grow ownership in other people? So – this was not really the key questions – the key question was a curiosity about how people that inspire others – inspire them to become a part of something, a task, working on a challenge, whatever – how does someone get others to involve themselves in what YOU is fully emerged in?
How can you get a team to own the process of the team work..
All these questions is about the same – and I can`t even now communicate the point clearly – so I guess I just try to tell the story and see if you grow your own neuron-tree – of understanding. IF you like this – tell me why, and how you do it.
So, PINKs video – which was my igniting moment – it just said BOOM – and this is what followed.
So – the video was reflection he had on the different pitches he seen, reflected on, in the process of writing one of his brilliant books.
MORE specifically THIS pitching reflection was something about
– that there is one kind of pitching that is about asking questions.
He reflected – or talked about – what asking questions could add to the pitching process. What it potentially did – to others peoples brain – when you were asking questions.
What I CHOSE TO HEAR AND UNDERSTAND was that when you ask people a question – and they are interested enough to THINK ABOUT IT – the question you ask – you inspire people to grow neuron-network in their brain – that is what thinking is – neuron-growth.
And when you inspire people to think about a question you ask – you can – if you are able to nurture the person and the growing of the neuron seed you planed – and it grows into a neuron-tree – what happens then – could potentially be thought as planting something – a thought, or at least some kind of reflection neuron-network – that potentially can connect to other neurons, like when I had this sucking feeling – which I described as a magnet feeling – that the core questions – how do I grow ownership to something in other people? When that question was a magnet that then searched and kind of sucked neurons from around the different areas of my brain – they were connected with – all first time neurons are at it thinnest – but if you are then able to grow MORE REFLECTION on this – and these neurons are reflected on – and build on – this – back and forth – is what is called neuron that fire together wire together – this – thinking – on something is a kind of INVESTMENT of interest – and this – when you are able to listen – like in an active listening manner – asking check back questions – that are not what I call feedback fighting questions – but ACTUAL honest and humble questions that you really want to know about – when you are able to grow the curiosity in others – and they are reflecting more and more – and sharing thoughts out with spoken words or drawings or other ways of communicating – you know you can communicate with your body, and .. anyway
Lets keep focus.
When you want to inspire and grow ownership towards something – like this neuron reflection-tree concept – IF this is something you like – and you invest time for reflecting on it – and you are aware and able to use the reflections on growing more and more – and newer and newer insights add onto this – ownership grows from investment of time and energy – then.
PINKs reflection example for you to reflect your self on it:
The PINK video on how you can pitch through the involvement of other people`s brains throught asking questions, other people reflect on the questions your pitch is about.
In that reflection train-ride he then talk about – he also mentioned the fact that WHEN ask questions you get people to invest time and neuron growth inside their own brains.
IF you reflect on questions – that, the action of thinking about something is like growing a set of neurons inside the brain. AND when that is working in the person doing the pitch – some kind of ownership, investment is done in the brain of others.
MY CONCLUSION reflection was then – which I try to share with you know – is about;
You can think of this as the planting of a TOPIC seed – and that is kind of the biggest difference between Manager and Leaders. A manager tells – and you kind of listen..
A leader that asks – invite you in to reflect on something..
From both perspectives – the words said – are then potentially doing this – in someones brain:
The seed is a “blob” in the brain of someone – it is introduced either by TELLING (the managers way) or ASKING (the leaders way) of growing involvement and
– what I find most important to growing OWNERSHIP – is that it is a choice – which leads (or not) to ENGAGEMENT, WHICH CAN LEAD TO INITIVITAES = PRO ACTIVITY. Or just minimum delivery.
You can tell (Manager) – introduce an idea – we need to do THIS – THIS way – now go. And people WILL do that – go.. and do that but not more..
OR
You can ASK (inspiring leaders) – what is it that we are trying to do here? Who are “we”? Why are we together here – who are we, why are we, what is it we are expected to do? What do you think? Have you thought of this – of that – uhm, anyone – what are you people thinking here?
What is the status of now, the way you see it.
What do YOU (some other team members) = always “forcing everyone in the group” = reflect – and by that grow slowly into a team?
THEN – you introduce a seed – the person define themselves as what – for what – and so on.. inspire seeds to occur in OTHER peoples brains..
Now – GROW, and people will – potentially keep growing the seeds into neurons – into trains of thoughts – that they potentially share with the other group members (as reflection partners) and then the inspiring leader – do that – nothing.
THIS Is then – the concept of “ask, don’t tell” leadership | coaching leadership – which is a “side-innovation-product” from the process of
“Growing ownership through growing and nurturing the reflection seed – into a tree = ownership”. Innovation is about something new or different that add value – well – true value – is uniqueness in action. You are unique – and I am so too – that is what makes all of us the same – unique.
You want unique contributions – slow down.
Think.
Plant.
Nurture.
Listen. Actively.
Don’t feedback fight (another concept for later).
Grow – the neuron seed into a tree – an ownership tree.
THAT reflection train made me reflect and grow the concept of the NEURON THREE of ownership.
The environment – the brain environment it – the seed was planted in was this kind of reality, sometimes I feel like kind of crazy – but that is ok:
What this concept is about – is the fact that you get people to invest time into thinking about something.
Reflection is about time to think. Not always in a direction. Let the brain – go, kind of.
Sometimes, is my own experience, alone and together with others, there is a continuous thinking going on, or growing on as a matter of fact (sometimes consciously – planned – that I
set aside time pocket in my calendar for thinking more, do more research, read, look at youtube videoes – google, the topic in hand, sometimes completely free unconsciously).
But to be able to catch the crazy ideas – and manage to use the “Darwin-reflection-walk” on them.. is also a thing.
Ok – last insight for your reflection.
Walking with a free mind – as part of the reflection tree nurture process. Stay with me.
Darwin walking – stay with me it comes…
Then, when walking – I can feel my knowledge grow – by being more and more confidence on the topic.
WHEN I then do this unconsciously – as in waking up with a bigger reflection on the topic, and idea, that I sometimes catch..
Sometimes I do BOTH, consciously write down something on a piece of paper – and then take Mala the dog for a walk – the same “Darwin”- habit track that I always do, every Saturday and Sunday morning between 11 and 1300..
The route – Darwin “same track-walk” for releasing potential insights
– combining the planned conscious reflections – as in filling in more on the reflection before I go, and then
Unconsciously while walking – as I then go, sometimes, funny enough – on the same places in the track, an insight strikes.
This – geographic stimulated insight I learned by testing out “Darwin” walk technique on an island in Thailand back in 2001 when I had my 2 years of “project creativity” – which was about living without boundaries – as in – living without security net, alone – anywhere without address, income, future – just living in the NOW, and see what that process of living like this – alone, with whatever happens as the driver of – living
– what THAT experience did my thinking, my creativity.. and – one of those things that I then experimented on – was the Darwin-walk – experience for me.
Which then resulted in the ownership reflection tree concept of –
Reflection – that I just released – onto YOU
What are your reflections?
